PROFILE
Greenville, in Mercer County, is 65 miles
north of Pittsburgh and
has a population of about 6,700. Approximately 15,000 people live within a 15 -
mile radius.
The Greenville Area has a stable economy, educational and cultural
advantages, and unlimited recreational opportunities.
More than 50 manufacturing industries provide jobs for area residents.
One of the leading employers, Trinity Industries, is one of the largest
manufacturers of rail cars in the nation. The Werner Co., headquartered in Sugar Grove
Township, has become the standard in the climbing equipment industry and is
also one of the nation's leading independent aluminum extruders.
Other industries include: Jamestown Paint Co., GTI, Hodge Foundry,
Agway, Salem Tube, Damascus-Bishop Tube Co., and National Nickel Alloy Corp.
The Greenville-Reynolds Development, three miles south of Greenville,
has 47 diversified manufacturing companies. Served by two major railroads, the
development area is within 12 miles of Interstate 80. Route 60, 12 miles south,
offers easy access to the Pittsburgh International Airport.
In addition to a growing industrial base, the Greenville area offers an
excellent educational and cultural environment.
Thiel College, in Greenville, offers
a four-year liberal arts program with studies in 22 major fields and its Center
for Lifelong Learning meets area residents' ongoing educational needs. Also,
the public has access to the college's swimming pool, eight tennis courts, and
two gymnasiums. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra annually presents several
concerts in Thiel's Passavant Center.
The borough's Riverside Park has a full-time recreation program
sponsored by the Greenville Area United Way, Borough Council, and the
Greenville School District. The
park has a nature study center, trails, swimming pool, and gymnasium. During
the summer, a community band presents concerts at the park's amphitheater, a
natural stone structure that seats 2,500. Bordering the park is a
canal museum that
authentically depicts the history of the area's canal era. For railroad buffs,
there's a rail transportation museum in the borough.
East of Greenville, McKeever
Environmental Learning Center, directed by a consortium of five area state
colleges, has programs and events for all ages. McKeever borders Goddard State
Park and Lake Wilhelm. Other area lakes include Pymatuning Reservoir and
Conneaut Lake, both to the north, and the
Shenango River Dam,
to the south, all of which have excellent picnic, boating, swimming, fishing,
and camping areas. Conneaut Lake Amusement Park at Conneaut Lake; the largest
body of water in the state-has entertained families for years.
Greenville, a peaceful, college community in the rolling hills of
western Pennsylvania combines the advantages of small-town living with easy
access to the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
